The IT world's biggest emerging trend is cloud computing, a development with the potential to dramatically alter data storage as we currently know it, Newsweek argues.
According to the article, the basic idea behind cloud computing is that data - i.e. documents, images, video, audio - is stored on an internet server rather than an individual PC.
This development means computer or smart phone users can access their cloud-stored documents whenever and wherever they like (provided they have web access).
The benefits of storing data 'in the sky' rather than on a PC are said to be improved personal productivity and an end to the tiresome (and sometimes forgotten) process of backing up data.
