Gossip, criticism and bitching are all avoidable workplace evils and should be tackled strategically in order to bolster productivity, a new book claims.
In The No Complaining Rule Jon Gordon claims negativity eats away at profits; in fact, it's claimed griping costs the US economy between $200 and $300 billion a year in lost productivity.
To this end Gordon suggests that businesses implement a ban on complaining unless criticism is directed to someone in a position to fix a problem.
Examples of positivity at work include 'complaints free' firm PPR, which has been voted one of the best US workplaces for the last five years and enjoyed above average growth for the past 12 years.

It is impossible to mandate that gossiping and negativity be removed from the workplace. The only way to rid an organisation of this crippling situation is through the creation of a positive and inclusive culture. A culture where people actively wish to partake of the positive experience, where they understand that it is not just good for the bottom line but good for themselves and their families, where the people are truly alive in their bodies, minds and above all in their sprit. Good culture involves good working practices, good team dynamics and most importantly honesty in the companies dealing. Employees need to be able to look in the mirror after a hard day’s work and feel that their actions have contributed on just to the bottom line but to society at large. At the end of the day “The people are the culture and the culture is the people”
At Indigo Training we create such places and people love their companies just as much as themselves because they are one and the same.

Negativity is largely influenced by the general consensus of the public. Unfortunately, there's usually more negativity compared to positive vibes because there's a lot less management vs peons.
Secondly, strong leadership and charisma is few and far between leading to more gripe
