The new director of MIT's pioneering IT lab, Frank Moss, suggests innovation stalwarts like the MIT Media Lab may no longer be the places where the best ideas are born.
Moss thinks that, in the future, online communities of inventors and organised start-ups—will generate the best ideas (rather than universities and corporate research labs) as has already happened in Internet music sharing and open-source software.
"Ideas and innovation are going to come from consumers," he says. "This is a process companies are totally out of."
