Ross is recognised in the TAFE system as a successful business leader with a clear understanding of the value of Vocational Education and Training to the individual, the enterprise and the community.

In his role as Institute Director, he ensures operations reflect the visions and goals of the Department and the wider TAFE network.  He leads by example and successfully manages a profitable multi-million dollar business, stabilising and growing that business to serve local, national and international clients.

As a Member of the Sunshine Coast Business Council, Sunshine Coast Chamber of Commerce, State Government Regional Managers Network, and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s Economic Development Advisory Board, Ross participates regularly in dialogue about the Institute’s role in the region and beyond.

This category celebrates the innovation, strategic thinking and visionary leadership of executive and C-Suite leaders from the public and private sector.

Nominees include senior managers, executives and leaders of businesses across all industries, who have worked for their organisation in a professional management capacity for at least 12 months

The Professional Manager of the Year category is not only for CEO's or high profile executives but is aimed at those who have made management their profession – who have had an extraordinary impact on their organisation's financial success through forward thinking strategies.

Nominees must be able to demonstrate:

• The ability to manage complex tasks, people, processes and the macro-environment
• Recognition by their organisation, board, staff or other stakeholders as showing excellence in management and leadership
• Effective communication of their organisation's goals and vision to all stakeholders
• A commitment to mentoring or other leadership activities
• Demonstrated performance to budget

Nominees may be employed in either the public or private sectors.

The 2011 Not for Profit Manager of the Year is...

Dawn Lang

Representing the Gold Coast

Under the expert direction and vision of Dawn since 1994, A B Paterson College has grown from 660 students to a current enrolment of almost 1400.

Ensuring the culture of the College is maintained and further enhanced is a major focus of Dawn’s role.  She has articulated a vision of excellence, and linked strategy and everyday actions in the school community to this vision.

In 2003, Dawn was made a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators for her work in pedagogical innovation, change management and contribution to education.

Her drive and vision have ensured the College is recognised today as a leading educational force, not only on the Gold Coast, but also nationally and internationally.  Dawn is preparing to retire from the College at the end of this year, after 18 years of dedicated service.

The Not for Profit sector makes important contributions to society and the economy, the impacts of which are sometimes overlooked. This category was introduced in 2008 based on a strong and organic response from the Brisbane business community – it was clear that not for profit managers deserved peer recognition.

Nominees in the Not for Profit Manager of the Year category are senior managers, executives and leaders in this sector who have worked for their organisation in a professional management capacity for at least 12 months.

These managers have transformed cultures; aligned the development of individuals in their organisation to the needs of the business culture and managed the demands of stakeholders with finesse.

Nominees must be able to demonstrate:

• The ability to manage complex tasks, people, processes and the macro-environment
• Recognition by their organisation, board, staff or other stakeholders as showing excellence in management and leadership

Nicholas has transformed a family-owned business to a large scale, innovative and professional entity, specialising in urban vegetation and natural areas management throughout South East Queensland.

Through 20 years of management and development, he has grown his idea from a one man, Gold Coast-based operation to a multimillion dollar business, with a team of 60 professionals servicing government and commercial customers throughout the region.

Nicholas’s managerial inclinations towards strategic planning, teamwork, systemic innovation, performance excellence and strong partner relationships have proven to be key success factors for the business, which has seen average annual growth exceeding 20% for the past ten years.

Nicholas gives back to the industry through chairing the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens Project Control Group and holding a board position at EnviroIndustry Gold Coast.
